Laila is based off an obsession. Walking through the Victoria & Albert Museum’s ‘The Fabric of India’ exhibition in 2015, Aditya Ahuja was struck by the beauty of an old 17th-century Gujarati textile. Ever since, when contemplating new interior products, he inexorably found his way back to that fascinating pattern. With the advent of the ADITYA AHUJA design house, he seized the opportunity to fully embrace his obsession and has created an entire collection centered around this intriguing design.

The original 17th-century cloth captivated his attention: it was intricate without being overpowering, it had movement and depth and yet it was also gloriously fun and playful. Laila is Aditya’s own reimagining of this beautiful piece. The pattern has been redrawn by hand, with some of the denser floral arrangements and animal motifs edited and altered to soften and lighten the overall appearance. The colours have been updated in clear vibrant hues and the motifs lightly spaced across a white ground.

The base fabric is pure Irish linen and the design is screen printed by hand. Inherent in screen printing are tiny inconsistencies that add to the uniqueness and movement of the piece, while the mill-made linen adds texture and allows for light to play through the pattern.
